Museo de la Ciudad (4.6) ★ Google Rating)

Here you will find a large number of objects and artwork that give you insight into great artists and photographers as well as insight into the development of the city. It is a building that houses history and information from the Porfiriato era. This building was inaugurated in 1908 as the Federal Post Office, which in its beginnings had post offices, telegraphs and was the headquarters of the Treasury and District Court. You will love this tour as it has 4 permanent exhibition halls with pre-Hispanic Mayan, colonial and contemporary pieces and objects.

The city of Progreso has done a fantastic job with the meteorite museum. They offer a very aesthetic and informational guided tour taking you back to more than 66 million years ago, before the meteorite that changed the course of our planet forever, hit the land right here where we are standing.

The tour takes us through the impact, its devastating aftermath, extinction of the dinosaurs, and to how modern humans discovered that this catastrophic event happened right here.

It’s most definitely worth a visit for all ages.

The Fernando Castro Pacheco Cultural Center offers a tour through 4 different rooms to discover the great works of this renowned Yucatecan artist. Fernando Castro Pacheco was a prominent Mexican artist, particularly known for his contributions to Yucatecan art. Born in 1918 in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, Castro Pacheco became renowned for his paintings, murals, and illustrations that often depicted scenes from the history and culture of Yucatán. His works are characterized by vibrant colors, strong symbolism, and a deep connection to the local heritage.

Castro Pacheco’s artistic career spanned several decades, during which he received numerous awards and honors for his artistic achievements. He played a significant role in promoting and preserving the cultural identity of Yucatán through his art.

His legacy continues to be celebrated in Mexico and beyond, with his works displayed in various museums, galleries, and public spaces. Castro Pacheco passed away in 2013, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences.

The MACAY, perhaps one of the most popular museums in Mérida, is a hub of creativity and artistic expression. It boasts a total of 15 rooms for temporary exhibitions, two galleries, and four permanent exhibition rooms, where the works of three great figures of Yucatecan art are displayed: Fernando Castro Pacheco, Fernando García Ponce, and Gabriel Ramírez Aznar. If you visit Mérida, it’s a must on your itinerary!
