May 13 & 14 Merida’s “Pueblos del Maíz”, Gastronomic Street Fair

As part of the recognition of Creative City, the Mérida City Council will present the festival “Pueblos del Maíz 2022”

Mérida has the designation of Creative City by UNESCO, under this recognition this festival will be held on May 13 and 14 to promote this ancestral ingredient.

Mérida, Yucatán, May 6, 2022.- The Mérida City Council, through the Direction of Economic Development and Tourism, complies with reinforcing the gastronomic traditions of the State with the celebration of the “Pueblos del Maíz 2022” festival, which will have as its objective not only the promotion of Yucatecan cuisine but rather support the economic reactivation and tourism of that sector.

With the appointment of Creative City in Gastronomy that the city received under the administration of the Mayor, Renán Barrera Concha, work is being done to promote tourism and attract more visitors interested in knowing the benefits of Yucatecan cuisine, therefore, conditions are generated that allow a greater economic benefit for the city.

Thus, the cities of Tucson, Arizona, Mérida, Yucatán, San Antonio, Texas, and Puebla, Puebla, come together to raise awareness about the work carried out by local producers, cooks, and promoters of corn, highlighting its importance in our culture and strengthening ties between people. It should be noted that the aforementioned entities are part of the UNESCO creative cities network and three of them are part of the delice network.

In the case of Mérida, La Ermita de Santa Isabel and the Barrio de San Sebastián will host the Gastronomic Street Corridor, where more than 30 food exhibitors, academic talks, cultural shows, and sensory experiences around corn will gather. There too, you can find “Ixiim”, the collaborative beer made within the framework of the festival.

Some of the activities that you can find in the Corredor de la Emita and San Sebastián are the presentation of the group “La Siembra” and the “Trovadoras del Mayab”, the projection of the film “Journey into Yucatán” by Symphonic Planet, the official ballet and the Mérida City Hall orchestra, “Tiempos de Milpa” photographic exhibition, a bicycle tour through the neighborhoods by Camino del Mayab and an agenda of conferences related to corn by the Colectivo Guardianes de las Semillas, Traspatio Maya and Kool Kab.

Likewise, a gastronomic exchange will be held where chefs from San Antonio and Tucson will share their talent and knowledge, taking into account important issues such as climate change and the consequences on the diet of the future.

It should be remembered that this event began to take place at the 2019 Tianguis Turístico, to connect cities that promote the economy, gastronomic tourism, and cultural exchange and collaboration between entities.

Pueblos del Maíz 2022 is an event organized by and for the cities and those who inhabit and visit them, taking into account values ​​such as social cohesion, good practices, and the generation of experiences.
