September kicks off with an incredible burst of cultural energy in Mérida, Yucatán! I am excited to present our cultural agenda for the month, filled with exhibitions, workshops, and must-see activities. I hope you enjoy the offerings and find events that enrich your cultural experience.

At Casa Gemela:

The 10/10 exhibition offers a collection of figurative paintings and drawings that adorn the elegant foyer of this iconic house.

Where: Casa Gemela

Katashi: La Forma del Presente 

Katachi is a practice aimed at awakening a state of Presence, fostering creative permeability with physical space. Through a body-centered exploration and active contemplation of the site or location, participants are able to integrate, develop, and create new movements, gestures, and sounds. These are unique to their personal journey and co-created with the space as vital expressions.

Where: Casa Creativa, Rómulo Rizo C.25 #479, Itzimná, Mérida

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 AM to 12 PM

Painting Exhibition: “Coincidencia”

The exhibition features the work of Ileana Magoda and Alexander Grawoig, who showcase abstract paintings, alongside José Luis Bojórquez, whose figurative pieces reflect the idiosyncrasies of signage in Yucatán, influenced by peninsular pop art.

Where: 54th Street 453B between 51 and 53, Centro. Mérida, Yucatán.

When: 10 AM–1 PM and 5 PM–8 PM, Monday to Saturday.

The gallery will soon announce the dates and times for guided tours on 54 Gallery’s social media.

Exhibition: Sosok I Soskil: “No todo lo que brilla fue oro”

Artist: Rafiki Sánchez

In Sosok I Soskil: No todo lo que brilla fue oro, Rafiki Sánchez explores the historical memory of Yucatán, challenging the concept of the collective consciousness. Through his work, Sánchez develops an essay that invites the audience to reconsider what we value, both in the past and in the present.

Learn Spanish Through Art, Culture & History: A Journey Beyond the Classroom

Art & Spanish is a personalized class where students learn about the art and history of Yucatan and Mexico all in Spanish–FOR ALL LEVELS OF SPANISH– working with books and materials specially selected for each student’s level and interest. Grammar diagrams and books are also used to strengthen the use of the Spanish language.

The class can be taught individually, in pairs, or in a group. The programs can be developed from beginning level to advanced and anyone older than 16 years old who wants to learn about art, culture, and Spanish is welcome. Classes are held at the student’s home or at a location that is convenient for the teacher and student. 

If you have had a hard time learning Spanish or want to master the language, this is a great way to do it especially if you are an art and history lover! You will learn so much about this wonderful country and start speaking Spanish more fluently. 

ABOUT RAUL 

Raúl Gasque is a multidisciplinary artist and educator. His works have been exhibited in museums, galleries, and institutions worldwide. His texts have been published in magazines, exhibitions, and catalogs. He currently has two columns where he writes about culture and arts. 

His passion for sharing knowledge about culture, transcultural scenarios, and language constantly evolves. At this time he has successfully developed educational programs for two prestigious international schools in Taiwan and a series about art history in different venues in Mexico and Yucatan.
