A Hot Spot in Merida: Hotel Sureño, La Mata Restaurant & El Fresco Rooftop bar

Wednesday August 30, 2023

There is a relatively new hotel on Calle 62 x 33a y 33 in the heart of the Centro. Construction started over 4 years ago, but as many businesses experienced, when the pandemic hit, the project screeched to a halt. Now, they have opened and it is a new hot spot in Merida, Yucatan.

Hotel Sureño is in an ideal location close to Paseo de Montejo and the historic center on Calle 62 x 33a and 33. It is a small boutique hotel decorated beautifully with various antiques from the 20th Century.

The Rooms

My room was a quaint standard room, small but they were very creative with the space. It is a mix of chic contemporary furnishings such as a large comfortable bed, large screen TV and details from the past such as the secretary desk from the 20’s, an antique globe, a speaker from the 30’s as well as artisan ceramics from Oaxaca. It’s a nice eclectic combination of Mexican style and its diverse history and culture.

They also have double, deluxe, superior and rooms available. Standard room starts at $3,303 Mexican pesos.

Gastronomic Experience in the Hotel

 La Mata Restaurant

The restaurant La Mata is one of my favorites in town. Chef Jorge Idelfonso has created a clever menu using all ingredients from the region. He combines flavors exquisitely and each dish I have tried is excellent.

They serve breakfast, brunch and dinner.
Open hours: Breakfast & Brunch 7:30am-2pm
Dinner 5pm-11pm

For my breakfast experiences we started with a plate of fresh seasonal fruits drizzled with a hint of citric, mint and ginger syrup that gave it such a nice touch. We had coffee served in China from the 1950’s, which always adds to the dining experience. You feel as if you are on the set of a Cary Grant movie. Then we tried the egg “cazuela” eggs served in a hot iron pan with roasted peppers and tomatoes, requeson cheese and the famous longaniza de Valladolid, a sausage with a smokey and slightly acidic flavor. It was served with freshly baked sourdough bread. The combination of flavors were incredible. Also we ordered a portabello toast served on fresh sourdough topped with hummus made from white beans and shitake, mustard greens and truffle oil.

For dinner Chef Idelfonso and Sous Chef Yesi Martin treated us to a six course dinner.

  • First Course: Inflated corn, stuffed with avocado and topped with sea bass & lima
  • Second Course: Sea bass Sashimi with an emulsion of pinta uñas plant & lime
  • Third Course: Shrimp flauta stuffed with a shrimp tartar
  • Fourth Course: Tempura Avocado leaf with a venison tartar
  • Fifth Course Fish of the Day Sea Bass with a Beurre Blanc sauce mixed with a pumpkin seed purée & rudabaga kimchi
  • Sixth Course: Guava mousse with meringue & a cheesecake with truffle

The dinner was absolutely delectable. One of my favorite dining experiences.
