El Otro Lado: Mediterranean Lounge Merida’s Newest Hot Spot

A new Mediterranean restaurant lounge, El Otro Lado, has just opened on Calle 51 x 56, and it’s quickly becoming the go-to spot for those seeking a cool, laid-back vibe. Whether you prefer dining indoors or on the breezy outdoor terrace, the cozy seating invites you to settle in for hours, sharing laughs and deep conversations with friends. The music enhances the atmosphere perfectly, offering a relaxed Latin-terrace-lounge soundtrack that sets the mood for a memorable evening.

🍹 Drinks & Bites

When you order a drink, the service kicks off with complimentary botanas—delicious snacks like marinated olives, roasted almonds, paprika-dusted boiled eggs, mini breads with roasted cherry tomatoes, peanuts, and artichoke hearts. The thoughtful touches add to the Mediterranean charm of the place.

At the bar, which is both indoor and soon to have a fully outdoor setup, you’ll find a great selection of signature cocktails, beer, wine, and spirits. One of the highlights we tried was the Pink Gin, served with a playful homemade lollipop infused with gin—fun and sophisticated! Another standout is what we called the Halloween Screwdriver—a mix of orange juice, vodka, and activated charcoal, creating a dark, moody top, perfect for the season.

🍽️ Off the Menu

Though the menu is simple, the flavors are anything but. The French owners, with their extensive culinary experience, have curated a selection of dishes that are unique to Mérida. You won’t easily find these Mediterranean flavors anywhere else in the city.

Here’s what we tried:

  • Arayes: A golden pita filled with spiced, succulent ground beef, this Middle Eastern dish blends crispy warmth with fragrant flavors. It’s served with extra pita bread—definitely a favorite!
  • Moroccan Fish: My personal favorite! This dish is light but bursting with bold flavors, served with a mix of garlic, cilantro, sweet peppers, and chiles that will have you savoring each bite.
  • Matbucha: A rich, smoky combination of tomatoes, sweet peppers, and garlic, slowly cooked over an open fire to develop deep, comforting flavors.
  • Egg Cocotte: A French classic, this dish bakes eggs in a ramekin with a mixture of cream, cheese, herbs, and vegetables. Light and satisfying, it comes with homemade bread, perfect for dipping.
  • Hummus: This creamy garbanzo and pine nut spread, seasoned with za’atar and served with zhug (a spicy Yemeni sauce), pairs beautifully with warm pita bread.

The best way to experience the menu is by sharing several dishes, allowing everyone at the table to enjoy the diverse flavors. Dishes range between $70-$140 pesos, making it an affordable yet flavorful culinary adventure.

Whether you’re after a relaxed evening with friends or want to discover something new and delicious in Mérida, El Otro Lado is an absolute must-visit!.
