What Is Fundación BAI?
Fundación BAI A.C. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving sexual health education and HIV and STD prevention programs in Yucatán.
The organization was formally established in Mérida in 2007, growing out of an initiative started in 2006 by the Texas nonprofit Brazos Abiertos.
Created in response to the high rates of HIV/AIDS in the region, with Yucatan state having one of the highest rates of HIV infection in Mexico, Fundación BAI began by supporting AIDS shelters in Yucatán. During those early efforts, organizers discovered that much of the funding was being used to cover funeral expenses rather than prevention programs.
This realization led to the creation of a new strategy centered on education, prevention, and community empowerment.
