Vegan and Vegetarian Merida, Yucatan

A Look Into Holistic & Wellness Centers In Merida, Yucatan

Written by Stephanie Carmon

This last month we explored holistic and wellness centers in Merida and its surroundings.  Balancing mind, body and spirit has become more and more part of the mainstream consciousness and there are many excellent options here to help people along their quest to live a holistic lifestyle.

Casa del Sol Wellness and Holistic Center

Also featured in our video and article about vegan and vegetarian scene here in Merida, Casa del Sol is a holistic center and vegan mini-super market. They are a center that focuses on a holistic vision integrating body, mind and spirit. Here they offers classes in a variety of philosophies including vegan lifestyle, yoga, meditation, Reiki and the Mayan Solar Tradition.

This center was founded by Nah Kin, La Abuela Venerable, an internationally renowned spiritual leader of the Mayan Solar Tradition.  This tradition teaches the knowledge which stems from the golden age of the Sacred Maya, the sacred time of the Mayan cosmic vision. It is a consciousness inspired by the wise teachings of Kinich Ahau who was the ascended prophet of the Maya. His teachings guide his followers to recover the light codes from the sun which allows them to access the sublime qualities of their soul. The teachings, knowledge and high vibration emanated in the energy of Kinich Ahau is what is received by the Venerable Abuela Nah Kin, who was born with all her spiritual faculties awakened. She has since dedicated her whole life to developing a higher consciousness. Much of the year she is travelling giving workshops and doing spiritual healing; however, when she is here in Merida, she gives talks about her teachings and does soul cleansings. She has also written many books about the teaching of Kinich Ahau and the rebirth and journey of the divine feminine.

This is a welcoming space where many of the staff speak English. They are open to giving all visitors information about their center and it is a great way to get introduced to the teachings of the Mayan Solar Tradition among other philosophies.

Casa Thai Foot Massage

Casa Thai Foot Massage is treasure tucked away in a small parlour in two different locations one on Avenida Yucatan in Fracc. La Florida and the other in Campestre on Avenida Rogers Hall in Colonia Buenavista. They offer an extraordinarily pleasurable traditional Thai foot massage experience.  It is owned by husband and wife team Jorge and Supulak–who also own Casa Thai restaurant and were featured in our article and video about great Asian food.  Supulak is from Thailand and both Jorge and Supulak flew back to Thailand several times to visit massage parlors and learn from experts so that their services would be an authentic Thai foot massage experience. The traditional Thai foot massage is a mix of Thai massage, Chinese reflexology and the use of medicinal creams. It consists of stimulating certain points and lines on the foot that connect to the main organs.

In Thailand it is considered traditional medicine. Apart from a completely enjoyable experience, the foot massage has holistic benefits and can help eliminate toxins from the body, better circulation, stimulate lymphatic drainage, improve sleep, and alleviate tension. Also for those who have pain in their plantar fasciitis or heels this treatment can relieve discomfort. The massage therapist not only massage the feet, but all extremities as well as the neck and head. Although this parlor has been open a relatively short time, it has a loyal clientele and it is important to make an appointment ahead of time. It feels absolutely heavenly and is an extraordinary experience. The massage runs about 45 minutes and costs $300 pesos.

Puksikal Centro Holistico

This holistic center is a beautiful spacious area in Xcanatun, a pueblo in the north end of town heading towards Progreso. Here you get the extra quality of being semi-isolated from the city and it is quiet and tranquil. This is a perfect place to go if you live or are staying at the beach or in the north end of town and do not want to drive too far. At Puksikal, they focus on physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellness as part of a holistic approach to living in harmony with the environment. Puksikal in Mayan means heart. They focus on listening to what the heart is saying and offer various methods to find a balance in life.

The therapies they offer are meditation, yoga, temazcal (spiritual sweat ritual), Gestalt therapy, Systematic therapy and biodecoding. Biodecoding is offered on the weekend as a 16 hour workshop or in individual sessions. They also invite special guests to give workshops on different holistic approaches to a healthy lifestyle.

Gestalt Therapy is a holistic approach where they say “the total is more than just the sum of all parts”. Everything exists and has a deep inner meaning; nothing merely exists in isolation. The focus of this approach is to help clients be more aware of the present moment. In doing so it increases people’s understanding of what is truly happening in their lives as opposed to what their perceptions tell them. Clients are asked to experience current and past situations, in the therapy space, where they can analyze them and become more adept at being mentally present. Together with Systematic therapy, a branch of psychotherapy focusing specifically on the quality of relationships, this focused approach is a way to live life with your feet on the ground. It’s a way to exist in this world freely and with an open mind while accepting responsibility for who we are. At Puksikal, they refer to this not as a “therapy”, which implies a clinical application, but as an approach to a holistic way of living.

Buda Yoga & Holistic Center

Buda Yoga & Holistic Center is a new studio that opened their doors on September 19, 2018 in Temozon Norte, a fastly growing suburb at the north end of Merida. This is a welcoming, illuminated center and an excellent option for those living in the north end of town or at the beach. This is a space where they focus on many different types of yoga practices.  They provide an environment where they encourage introspection and where you are allowed to practice on your own terms and at your own pace.  They offer hatha yoga, restorative yoga, yoga for kids, prenatal yoga, yoga with rope, yoga for older adults with limited mobility, and kundalini yoga. They also offer therapies such as:

Gestalt therapy: The focus of this approach is to help clients be more aware of the present moment. In doing so it increases people’s understanding of what is truly happening in their lives as opposed to what just their perceptions tell them.

Reiki: Works on different levels the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual enhancing everything in life. This ancient Japanese method of healing uses energy to balance the body and mind, and its benefits can be felt by both Reiki practitioners and their clients.

Bach Flower therapy: Using flowers this is a natural method of healing working to gently restore the balance between the mind and body. They are proven to gently soothe negative emotions like fear, worry, hatred, and indecision that disrupt the body’s equilibrium as a whole.

Extra Ocular Vision therapy: Extra Ocular Vision (EOV) is the name given to a nuevo-ancient training centered on teaching children how to expand their intuition and develop their pre-conscious mind. It is a form of brain/mind development using imagery, perception and blindfolding.

Access Consciousness: This is a different point of view about life. It allows you to change things that you thought you could not and create everything you desire in a different and easier way. The aim is to create a world of consciousness and oneness, where everything exists and nothing is judged.

Par biomagnetism: therapy that re-establishes normal cellular milieu through the use of pairs of magnets of medium intensity. The goal is to equalize the organism’s pH level – a critical determinant of health.

Emotion code:  simple yet powerful method of finding and releasing the trapped energies that inhabit your body: the Trapped Emotions that are limiting you and are affecting your ability to feel love and joy, and to create success.

Tai Spa

The Tai Spa is a favorite in town. Its service is incredible and when you enter you feel as if you are taken out of your normal everyday life and transported to a calm place where your only thought is to indulge in self-love and healing.

It opened ten years ago with two concepts in mind. The first was to offer their clients a unique experience working with all local and natural products creating treatments that gently enhance the natural beauty of each visitor. The second was to create a supportive working environment where their staff can become trained professionals and gain financial independence.

They believe that to be healthy on the inside will then allow us to look healthy and beautiful on the outside. Each treatment focuses on creating a space for relaxation, wellness, and happiness. They provide the tools for self-care and healing of the mind and spirit and recognize that when you love yourself you are able to give others love in abundance. They also give workshops and talks that have to do with a healthy lifestyle touching on topics of eating well, rest and meditation.

They have a staff of twenty-five women specialized in various spa treatments. Some of these treatments include relaxation rituals, healthy facials, hand and foot treatments, and massages. The experience one gets at The Tai Spa is absolutely pleasant and calming. It is my personal favorite spot for a manicure and pedicure. You sit in massage chairs, put your blindfold on and listen to meditative music while they waft lavender aromatherapy in front of your nose before completely massaging our feet and legs in the warm water. They clean and exfoliate your feet before leaving your toes perfectly painted. It’s such a treat that everyone should do for themselves at least once a month.
