Sometimes you just need to disconnect, and we found the perfect spot to do it: Rancho Kuxtal, a cozy, family-run ranch on the outskirts of Tizimín. Just 15 minutes from the town center, this hidden gem is where you swap the buzz of daily life for the rustle of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the friendly neigh from the 15 horses roaming the grounds.
Home Away From Home
At Rancho Kuxtal you are immersed in nature. The two casitas available for rent are very comfortable, with kitchenettes, fresh, modern finishes, and comfy beds that make for a rejuvenating night’s sleep.
Rancho Kuxtal was created by a couple raising five boys who wanted to build a sustainable ranch where the earth is fertile and pesticide-free. They have worked tirelessly to create a lovely space with plans to add a pool, restaurant, and even more activities this year.
Into the Yucatán Jungle (on Horseback!)
One of the highlights at Rancho Kuxtal is their horseback tour through the Maya jungle. The horses, gentle and full of personality, make the experience all the more magical. Guided by one of the family’s older boys, we meandered through sun-dappled trails beneath the lush jungle canopy. The horses moved at an unhurried pace along the dirt paths, transforming the ride into a meditative journey.
Gone was the hum of city life, replaced by the soothing rustle of leaves, the soft whispers of the wind, and the melodic chorus of birdsong. It’s not just a ride—it’s a serene escape into nature’s rhythm. Along the way, our guide shared insights into the ranch’s regenerative farming and the vegetation that we were seeing. It is a nice way to connect with the land and its soulful essence.
Sustainable Living, Yucatecan Style
This isn’t just a ranch—it’s a way of life. Rancho Kuxtal is all about sustainable and regenerative agriculture, proving that caring for the land can create a vibrant ecosystem where everyone benefits. The family has built this ranch from the ground up and they continue to build and work the land each day with lots of ideas for the future of the ranch.
The family also runs Kuxtal, a natural food store dedicated to organic, sustainable products. So when you visit, you’re not just enjoying a vacation—you’re supporting a movement toward healthier, more sustainable living.
Why You’ll Love It
Rancho Kuxtal is perfect for anyone who wants to slow down and connect with nature. Whether you’re relaxing in your casita, exploring the ranch, or getting to know the horses, there’s a sense of calm here that’s hard to find anywhere else.
With Tizimín—a town known for its cattle ranching and agricultural charm—just a short drive away, you can enjoy the best of rural Yucatán while still having access to modern conveniences. We were drawn to the area to experience the famous annual Three Kings Fair where you will witness thousands of people arriving in a pilgrimage to pay homage to the Three Kings of the Orient in the main church in the center of town. They also have a large agricultural exhibition, a bullfighting ring with many rodeo activities, and a carnival with rides and games. It’s quite a cultural experience!
