We visited Campeche, Mexico recently and stayed at Casa Japa, a stunning 4 bedroom colonial house from the 18th century which shares a wall with the picturesque El Dulce Nombre de Jesus church built in 1560. Casa Japa brings the past and present together making the guest feel as if they are reliving the 1700’s in modern luxury– a fairy tale equipped with an espresso machine, air conditioning and a lavishly comfortable sitting room. The house has a unique personality and has been redesigned with uttermost respect for its history.
As you open the antique door to get into the house you come into a large foyer and living area with high beamed ceilings. It’s a design of the well-known architect Jose Manuel Martinez. The design is a marriage between modern conveniences with the fantastic charm of history. He uses black and white and various line forms throughout the house.Â
The rooms are spacious, comfortable and elegant and there is enough space to sleep up to 10 people. The ground floor master suite is spectacular with a bathroom that connects the garden with the room.Â
The kitchen is a dream and fully equipped, and if I weren’t eating out the whole time I stayed, I would have loved to cook a leisurely dinner or two in the space! That kitchen is meant to be used to create fantastic meals. In fact it was while we were there the owners hosted a wonderful dinner, so the kitchen was put to good use! Check the video below.Â
On the rooftop they have a pool with a fountain, lounge and dining area, another master suite and it looks over a breathtaking 16th Century church. Next time in Campeche Casa Japa is the perfect place for a luxury stay. and some of the other colonial houses below. Also in the morning you see lots of birds flying around and dragonflies. It’s a perfect spot for sunrise or sunset.Â
A reference in Campeche of the new Mexican hospitality, Casa JAPA offers an elevated experience of private lodging. Its spacious areas allow for intimacy and tranquility, for rest and connection. Near the ocean, close to the central park, and next to a church, this clean- style traditional house is located in the Historic Fortified Town of Campeche.
