Merida’s First Stand-Up Comedy Club: Harvest Comedy

In July, Harvest Comedy Club opened its doors in the Itzimná neighborhood of Mérida, bringing something fresh to the city’s growing cultural scene. The club offers a diverse lineup of talented comedians almost every night of the week. While most shows are in Spanish, there’s a unique opportunity on Thursdays, when Ese Wey—a Comedy Central Latin America comedian and sometimes performs in English! This club is a fantastic addition to Mérida’s urban culture, introducing a new level of entertainment to the city.

What to Expect:

Each show has a cover charge, and there’s a bar offering snacks and drinks. After the show, you can stick around, chat with the comedians, and enjoy the atmosphere with friends.

The Rise of Comedy Clubs in Mexico

Comedy clubs are relatively new in Mexico, with stand-up starting in Mexico City in the 1990s. By 2010, the comedy scene really took off, with clubs opening in cities like Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Here in Yucatán, comedy has long been a part of local theater, with popular venues like Cuxum and Armando Manzanero showcasing regional comedy. However, stand-up comedy, in the style seen in Mexico City, is just starting to find its place, and Harvest Comedy Club is leading the way in Mérida.

The People Behind Harvest Comedy

This venture was started by Leah Nedvedovich and Oscar Vargas.

Leah (known as Leye), an actress, host, comedian, and mom, is one of the founders of Harvest Comedy. Originally from Mexico City, Leah moved to Mérida and helped launch this club to create a safe, accessible space for local comedians to perform and help the comedy scene grow. She gives courses as well on how to do stand-up comedy, so if it is something you are interested in, go for it! Ask Leah about it! Leah also speaks English, so a language barrier is no excuse!

Oscar Vargas, comes from the construction industry but shares a passion for the arts and has played a key role in bringing this project to life.

Although not an owner, Alex Marín y Kall (also known as Ese Wey) and Leah’s husband is worth mentioning as well as a key figure in the Mexican comedy scene, With over 20 years of experience, Alex has been a pioneer in Mexican stand-up comedy. His career spans everything from radio and TV shows to stand-up specials for Comedy Central. After spending time in London honing his skills, he returned to Mexico, becoming a major figure in the comedy world. Now based in Mérida, Alex continues to support and grow the local stand-up scene.
