Merida Fest 2022 Buena Vista Social Club, Carlos Cuevas & More: A Culture and Arts Extravaganza

It’s one of our favorite times of year! Merida Fest is officially happening to kick off the 480th anniversary of the city.  This is a celebration of arts, culture, gastronomy and music and there will be several shows and performances everyday during the month of January. The Merida Fest will last 18 days ending on January 23rd. There will be more than 200 events including music, dance performances, book presentations, theater, concerts, art expositions and foodie events. 

¿When will the Merida Fest start?

The Merida Fest will start January 5th with the traditional “Mañanitas” (the celebration on the eve of the actual anniversary January 6th) in front of a controlled and reduced crowd of 400 people at the the municipal palace.

There will be a drone light show that will be seen all over the centro starting at 8pm and another at 10pm.

On January 6th the grand event of music from Yucatan, Cuba, and Columbia will take place at the Municipal Palace at 8:30pm featuring Yahal Kab, Juan Pablo Manzanero, Katie James and  Oriol Caro. You can also see the drones show again at 10pm at the remate (Calle 47 and Paseo de Montejo).

What are some of the hightlighted events MID City recommends? 

  • Display of Wolfgang Volz photography documenting Christo (1935–2020) and Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009)  breathtaking works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Since 1971, Wolfgang Volz documents the artists’ life and work with his camera. January 22 11am is the inauguration of the exhibition in front of the Palacio Cantón on Paseo de Montejo. It will be there until March 24th.  This exhibit will also be at Centro Cultural La Cupula from January 22-February 12th. 
  • Los Juglares and Carlos Cuevas  a spectacular show of Trova and Bolero not to miss. Janurary 8th 8pm at Remate Paseo de Montejo. 
  • Arianna Puello Composer, rapper and Spanish actress with origens from the Dominican Republic. She was one of the first women rappers in the Spanish language.  You can see her on January 15th at 9:30pm at the Remate de Paseo de Montejo 
  • Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Buena Vista Social Club with Ibrahim Ferrer Jr. January 23rd at 8pm at the Municipal Palace.

Where can I get tickets to events and what is the price? 

All events in the Merida Fest are free of charge and because of the pandemic, each event will have a reduced amount of people allowed in the venue. Therefore, you will need to get all tickets online beforehand. For tickets go to: tusboletos.mx

All events will be able to be seen live online as well as in person. The city is taking all precautions for the pandemic and those attending must wear a mask and follow protocols.
