TAGS Alpargatas — A Yucatecan Classic We Absolutely Love
Heritage Footwear Reimagined for Modern Yucatán Living
For a gift that is truly Yucatecan, you can’t go wrong with TAGS Alpargata — a beloved local brand that has modernized the iconic alpargata from Yucatan (the sandal that is used in traditional folkloric dances from the region). Lightweight, breathable, and stylish, these shoes are crafted by hand using traditional techniques passed down for generations.
YOU CAN PERSONALIZE YOUR DESIGN! Create whatever design you’d like on the material and they will print it out and make your shoe out of it!
TAGS has been around for over 12 years, first making its debut in various bazaars around town. It has become a household Merida brand, and they export around the world. It’s a grassroots endeavor, and the two owners work with a collective of Maya artisans in Hunucma who make the shoes in their workshop. It’s a truly great company to support, and you get super cool shoes. It carries the spirit of old-school Mérida: practical, beautiful, and made to walk comfortably in our warm climate. From minimalist neutrals to bold festive colors, each pair is a celebration of regional culture and craftsmanship. They’re perfect for holiday posadas, weekend strolls, or sunny beach days — and they make an unforgettable gift for anyone who loves timeless, local design.
