A local initiative to promote the Yucatan’s renowned chicharra preparation method was launched in 2017, with the aim of supporting economic development in the southern part of Merida. Xcalachen, a neighborhood that has fully embraced chicharra as an essential part of the Yucatecan gastronomy, is now the go-to place to experience the original and traditional recipe of this local delicacy.
The story of chicharronerias in Xcalachen dates back to 1950 when Manuel Rodriguez Sierra and his wife Elda Maria Valdez opened “El Rey David” on 95th Street and 62nd Avenue. Although the original establishment no longer operates, the tradition has been carried on by new chicharronerÃas, turning Xcalachen into a local culinary hub.
In April, the annual Festival of the Chicharra takes place, featuring horse races from Argentina and other Yucatecan customs, as a way of preserving ancient traditions and supporting local families involved in the chicharra business.
Join us on Saturday, April 15, 2023, for the 6th edition of the Festival of the Chicharra in the traditional neighborhood of Xcalachen. Enjoy seven booths of chicharra, desserts, drinks, live music and theater, games, and much more!
Mark your calendar and don’t miss the opportunity to experience the vibrant Yucatecan culture and cuisine in the heart of Xcalachen.
We hope you enjoyed your visit to Mérida!
