Paseo de Montejo’s Cultural Corner: Matilda & La Bottega

Paseo Montejo and Calle 29, one our favorite corners for art, culture, gifts and wine

Matilda Concept Store and La Bottega restaurant and wine store are tucked into one of my favorite corners on Paseo de Montejo. Located just one block from the iconic Monumento a la Patria, both places opened their door about a year and a half ago. I go often for wine and a charcuterie board or stop by quickly to get a bottle of wine on my way to dinner with friends. Matilda is a place I frequent when needing a special gift for someone or myself or if I just want to see what is new in the store that features products and art from Mexican artists, jewelers and artisans.

Matilda sells the designs of both well-known and small artists. They give courses (online and in person) on many topics having to do with art and design, both to learn for one’s own enrichment or for one to learn a new craft. Featured Artist at Matilda: Emilio Lameiras

At Matilda Concept Store, it is important to feature and support Mexican talent. Each month they choose a different artist to display on their wall/gallery space.  This month we an see the works of Emilio Lameiras

From Merida Yuctan and living in both Merida and Mexico City, Lameiras is a plastic artist who has had wide success in Mexico. Locally he has exhibited in Olimpo Cultural Center, the Peon Contreras Gallery as well as in la Pasaje Picheta Gallery. In Mexico City he has been featured in la Casa-Museo León Trotsky, and in Queretero in la Galería Libertad del Instituto de Cultura.

During the past few years, his works have reflected on the natural world and he dives into a chromatic interpretation that awakens the senses of the spectator. His pieces provoke a dialogue about recurring topics about the peculiarity of nature, the adversity of industrialization and pop humor. He captures the effect of sunlight on mundane consumerism, always playing with color and light. You can see an example of his works on display in Matilda below in the video.

We recommend checking out Matilda when in town for sure!
