From Traditional to Trendy: Exploring Mérida’s Must-Visit Bread Bakeries

In Mérida, you’ll find a great number of contemporary bakeries, where old techniques are used to create classic Mexican breads like conchas and bolillos, alongside modern artisanal spots that bring a new take to traditional recipes. Over the past 5 years there has been a boom in great bread in the city. Here are some spot to go if you have that oh so familiar bread craving.

Soco Mérida

This organic artisan bakery has been a favorite since its start specializes in sourdough bread, coffee, and French pastries, offering a unique and diverse menu that blends modern flavors with traditional techniques. Every dish and bread shares their deep commitment to quality, using locally grown fresh ingredients whenever possible. From croissants to rich espresso and perfectly baked sourdough, each item is baked with care and passion.

Pan & Koffee:

Pan & Koffee is a hopping spot in Santa Ana neighborhood. It is a bakery and coffee house and has a large dining area upstairs and downstairs and stunning interior design that makes you want to sit, eat your crossaint and ponder life. It also has a beautiful green space on the ground level of the cafe.  As you go upstairs you can see the baker baking fresh bread. They have a variety of sourdough bread, delicious pastries a great breakfast menu and a full coffee bar. It’s a cool place to chill and enjoy a pastry, breakfast and coffee with friends. 

Justo Bread Studio:

Justo Bread Studio, has a great view of the Monumento a la Patria on Paseo de Montejo and is a great spot to watch passerbys. They offer daily baked sourdough bread and also have some vegan bread options. They serve breakfast and lunches and is one of our weekly spots to stop for great bread.

Escargot Rustico

Escargot has a small branch in Itzimna across from the historic iconic church as well as a larger branch in Santiago, Centro of Merida. The branch in Santiago is a cafeteria, where french cuisine meets mexican traditional bakery style. They offer a variety of traditionally made Mexican breads as well as French style breads and pastries. You can get coffee, breakfast and lunch!

Mercado de Pan:

Located in Itzinmá, Mercado de Pan is a bakery where the quality and taste matter the most. It’s a small place, just to pop in and grab sourdough bread and pastries to go. We love it here because you get sliced bread, and multigrain sourdough perfect for sandwiches or coffee with bread and butter. 

L’Amour du Pain:

L’Amour du Pain is tucked away in Aleman and is a hit with locals and foreigners alike. If you’re like me and you love the smell of fresh bread in the morning then you will not be able to resist popping in and filling your basket with freshly baked goods, from savory baguettes and loaves of crusty bread to sweet pastries filled with delicious jam. They bring the traditional French bakery to Merida. The pastries are super worth indulgin in! 

Catalina Bakery:

A cafeteria where you can have an incredible experience, Catalina Bakery offers that and so much more. Catalina has a large venue from the classics and most unique recipes, they also are proudly makers of sourdough,as they said that there’s nothing better than an authentic, crunchy and tasty flavor.
