Mérida’s Art Scene: A Month of Openings, Collective Exhibits, and Creative Bloom in Merida, Yucatan

As Mérida’s art community continues to flourish, January brings a wave of exciting exhibitions and events that celebrate creativity, collaboration, and the power of visual storytelling. From luminous glass installations inspired by water to collective showcases of international and local talent, the city’s galleries are alive with color, emotion, and innovation. Here’s your guide to the must-see art happenings this month.

From Tuesday to Sunday : Museo de la ciudad

Museo de la Ciudad does an fantastic job of curating and bringing together some of Merida’s artists. The buidling is the iconic and historic former post office and there are several halls for art exhibitions. 

Currently on display and worth seeing: 

  1. Bryan Portrillo: Ciudad en Movimiento: Sociedad de la entropia / City in Motion: Society of Entropy
  2. Vida y costumbres: el Mercado Lucas de Galvez y sus alrededores / Life and Customs: The Lucas de Gálvez Market and Its Surroundings in collaboration with the Pedro Guerra Photographic Archive of the Autonomous University of Yucatán
  3. De Ida y Vuelta / Round Trip work by Fabricio Van Broek

May 8 through May 23 : Vivencias del Mayab

A visual ode to Yucatán—told through color, memory, and place.

Renán Tutzin presents Vivencias del Mayab, a new exhibition featuring 20 works in oil and acrylic that capture the textures, light, and everyday emotion of the region. Born in Seyé, the artist brings an intimate perspective to the canvas—one that feels both personal and deeply rooted in the territory.

Set inside the gallery corridor of the iconic Teatro José Peón Contreras, the exhibition becomes a quiet walkthrough of the Mayab—its atmosphere, its people, its rhythm.

May 16 : Donde El Alma Tiene Plumas

A poetic exploration of the human spirit—through wings, color, and symbolism.

Betzabé Martínez Vargas presents Donde el alma tiene plumas, a new exhibition that moves between the emotional and the symbolic, using birds as a bridge between the earthly and the intangible.

Across 20 paintings, each species becomes a metaphor: resilience, precision, harmony, adaptability. From woodpeckers to hummingbirds, the works invite viewers into a quiet reflection on what it means to persist, transform, and find balance.

Hosted at Centro Cultural José Martí, this opening offers a thoughtful, family-friendly art experience rooted in sensitivity and introspection.

The Centro de Artes Visuales by Sedeculta presents a new series of exhibitions showcasing a wide panorama of contemporary art in Yucatán, bringing together different perspectives, generations, and artistic languages.

What to expect: A curated journey through multiple exhibition rooms, each offering a distinct vision—from personal collections and contemporary narratives to experimental and archival work.

Exhibitions include works by Juan Pablo Mier y Terán, Yael de Gorostegui, Maru Fitzmaurice, Da Burn Gallery, and Gabriel Quintal, each occupying different gallery spaces with unique concepts and approaches.

You can also experience “El que perdió su silla” by Juan Cardeña as part of the Noches de Artes Vivas program.
