Cariñito Cevichería Peruana did exactly that. Formerly known as Peruano in Santa Lucía, the restaurant has found a beautiful new home just steps from 500 Noches on García Lavín, bringing one of Peru’s most celebrated culinary traditions to Colonia México Norte.

The moment we walked in, we knew this was going to be a lunch worth lingering over.

Warm earthy colors, handcrafted ceramic plates, artisan glass pitchers, and lush greenery surrounding the dining room create a space that immediately feels relaxed and welcoming. It has the kind of atmosphere that encourages you to slow down, order one more dish, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon with friends.

Before long, our table was filled with vibrant colors, fresh seafood, and some of the most satisfying ceviche we’ve had in Mérida.

Peruvian Ceviche: A Celebration of Freshness

Peruvian ceviche isn’t simply seafood marinated in lime juice.

It’s a carefully balanced combination of fresh fish or seafood, citrus, chiles, aromatics, herbs, and leche de tigre—the intensely flavorful marinade that has become one of Peru’s culinary signatures. Add sweet potato, toasted cancha corn, fresh corn, avocado, or crispy calamari, and every bite becomes a balance of acidity, sweetness, creaminess, and crunch.

It quickly became one of our favorite dishes of the afternoon because it showcases three completely different interpretations of Peru’s national dish.

Ceviche Mixto

Fresh white fish, shrimp, octopus, and crispy calamari arrive alongside toasted cancha and sweet potato.

Ceviche Carretillero

Considered one of Peru’s classic ceviches, it combines fresh white fish with crispy calamari, sweet corn, and an intensely flavorful leche de tigre that had us reaching for every last spoonful.

Atún Apasionado

Then came one of the afternoon’s biggest surprises.

Raw tuna is paired with passion fruit honey, sesame oil, creamy avocado, and leche de tigre to create a dish that’s both familiar and unexpected.

Beyond the Ceviche

Although ceviche may be the star, the rest of the menu deserves just as much attention.

Empanadas Criollas de Yuca

I’m a huge fan of yuca, so these immediately caught my attention. Golden and crisp on the outside, the yuca dough gives way to fillings of either shrimp or pork that are comforting, flavorful, and surprisingly light.

Causa Limeña

One of Peru’s most recognizable dishes, Causa Limeña layers seasoned yellow potato with avocado, tomato, and your choice of tuna or chicken. Served chilled, it’s creamy without feeling heavy and wonderfully refreshing during Mérida’s warmer months.

And don’t skip dessert; the Miso Cheesecake turned out to be the perfect ending.
