There are some weekends that feel like a quick escape. And then there are weekends that somehow reset your nervous system, inspire your creativity, and remind you that maybe life is meant to include more massages under mangroves and less answering emails.
This Mother’s Day weekend, my daughter and I headed to Devossion by Live Aqua Playa del Carmen for a little Riviera Maya getaway — and honestly, we already want to go back.
What made the weekend especially sweet was seeing so many other mothers and daughters from around the world celebrating there too. Everywhere you looked there were groups laughing over breakfast, taking selfies by the infinity pools, heading to the spa in fluffy robes, or dancing together late into the night. It gave the whole resort this warm, celebratory energy that felt really special.
And for a MID CityBeat recommendation? This one absolutely earns it.
Located in the heart of Playa del Carmen right on the Caribbean Sea, Devossion manages to feel luxurious and social at the same time — with a strong focus on art, wellness, food, creativity, and experiences beyond simply laying on a beach chair all day (although yes… we definitely did some of that too).

First Impressions: Maya Inspiration Meets Caribbean Glamour
The moment you arrive, the hotel makes a statement.
You’re welcomed by dramatic artistic installations inspired by the Maya world, including a massive sculptural waterfall that evokes the grandeur of Chichén Itzá. One of the very first pieces you encounter is an enormous bench carved in the form of the sacred Kukulkán serpent — powerful, beautiful, and just theatrical enough to make everyone immediately pull out their phones.
From there, the property opens into long airy corridors framed by mangroves, cafés, cocktail lounges, and open gathering spaces. And then suddenly — that famous Riviera Maya turquoise appears in the distance like a movie reveal.
It’s the kind of arrival that immediately lowers your blood pressure by at least 30%.
Suites, Pools & That Caribbean Blue
The resort has more than 300 suites, all with ocean views, which honestly feels a little unfair in the best possible way.
Our room was spacious, calming, and extremely comfortable — the kind of bed where you accidentally take a “20-minute nap” that becomes two hours. The bathrooms are large and beautifully designed, and the terraces make it dangerously tempting to order room service and never leave.
Outside, several infinity pools stretch toward the sea, surrounded by lounge beds and stylish relaxation areas that somehow manage to feel lively without chaotic.
Yes, there has been some seaweed along the Riviera Maya coast lately — but we were genuinely impressed by how much effort the hotel puts into maintaining the beach. The sand was cleaned twice daily, and the beachfront remained beautiful and enjoyable throughout our stay.
A Resort That Goes Beyond the Typical Vacation
One thing we loved about Devossion is that it offers much more than endless lounging by the pool. Throughout the day there are activities focused on creativity, wellness, and movement. We joined a fun bike tour through Playa del Carmen, took a ceramics class, and my daughter even did a bag-painting workshop. Between the art activities, wellness experiences, and beautiful spaces to relax, the resort feels both inspiring and energizing.
The Spa Is Worth the Trip Alone
The spa was honestly one of the highlights of the entire stay. Hidden beneath the mangroves, the cenote-inspired hydrotherapy area feels incredibly peaceful, with warm pools, cave-like architecture, and a calming atmosphere that immediately slows you down. We enjoyed excellent massages, and the spa facilities also include a cold plunge pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, and lap pool. It’s the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time — and not mind at all.
Dining That Goes Far Beyond Typical Resort Food
One of the biggest surprises of the weekend was just how consistently good the food was across the property. There are 14 gastronomic options including restaurants, bars, cafes and poolside pop-up and the resort offers several distinct dining concepts, each with its own atmosphere and style.
Our first night started at Carnivore The Grill with excellent wine and beautifully grilled steak before heading underground to The Door, the hotel’s speakeasy-style lounge, where cocktails, music, and a fantastic DJ quickly turned the evening into a lively dance party.
Breakfasts at Liberi, the buffet restaurant were honestly spectacular, with everything from tropical fruits and fresh juices to made-to-order eggs and Mexican specialties. You also had the choice to eat at We also loved lunch at Fiorella, the resort’s beautiful open-air Italian restaurant, as well as the relaxed poolside dining at Ceviva and Flor de Sal, where ceviches, cocktails, and fresh Mexican flavors made long afternoons by the pool even harder to leave. Our final dinner at Nami, the Japanese restaurant, was another standout with beautifully presented dishes and incredibly fresh flavors.
Service That Makes a Difference
What really elevated the experience beyond the beautiful design was the warmth of the staff.
We had butler service during our stay, and having someone available by WhatsApp for anything we needed made everything feel seamless and easy. Every interaction — from wait staff to activity coordinators — felt genuinely kind and accommodating.
That level of hospitality changes everything.

Final Thoughts
What we loved most about Devossion by Live Aqua Playa del Carmen is that it feels thoughtfully designed around pleasure, beauty, creativity, and connection.
You come for the Caribbean views and luxury resort atmosphere — but you leave remembering the little moments too:
the laughter during ceramics class, late-night dancing at the speakeasy, quiet moments in the spa, conversations by the pool, and the feeling of sharing all of it with someone you love.
And honestly? That’s probably the best kind of luxury there is.
