Holiday Inn: Tradition and Comfort in the Heart of Merida

The Holiday Inn is located on Calle Colon, right around the corner from the beautiful and iconic avenue of Paseo de Montejo. This is a renowned building that opened its doors as a hotel 42 years ago. The hotel, like many of the buildings in the historic center of Merida, has a fascinating story and is part of the living history that identifies this town as a cultural treasure.

A grand estate that took up most of the city block, it was originally built in the 18th Century by Don Escalante during the time of the great henequen boom in Yucatan. It was called la Quinta San Jacinto. This majestic mansion was later bought by mayor of Merida and henequen tycoon, Don Augusto Peon, for he and his wife Doña Jacinta Bolio and their children to live in. After Don Augusto Peon’s death, the house was passed down to the family. In 1978, the Inmobiliaria Hotelera de Yucatan bought this estate to turn it into a 5 star hotel. In 1980, Hotel Holiday Inn opened its doors, being the only hotel of its caliber in Merida. The hotel still today maintains much of its 18th Century charm. You can appreciate the history in the facade, the halls, restaurants, rooms and the lovely interior patio area with a terracota red color that was typical of the haciendas during their boom.
