One of the questions I hear all the time from people who have recently moved to Mérida is: Where do I go to meet people?
Fortunately, Mérida has become much more interesting after dark.
Centro in particular has developed a great collection of bars, modern cantinas, listening rooms and restaurant-bars that attract a mix of locals, foreigners living in Mérida and visitors. Some have live bands, others bring in DJs, and several occupy old Mérida houses where the evening spills from one room into another. The atmosphere tends to be casual enough that you don’t feel strange arriving without a huge group.
Luis Feliz
Description: Luis Feliz is a restaurant-bar in Mérida Centro with a casual, social atmosphere that gets considerably livelier as the evening progresses. It’s the kind of place to come with friends for drinks and stay for whatever the night turns into. Expect to spend roughly MX$200–700 per person, depending on what you’re drinking and eating.

Music/what makes it special: Music is part of the overall social atmosphere rather than the only reason to come, with salsa, banda and Latin rhythms in the mix. And then there’s the slightly unexpected part: they sometimes put a boxing ring inside and host Lucha Libre. Definitely not your average night at the bar.
Estelar Restaurante
Description: Estelar is a Mexican restaurant-cantina that becomes much more animated at night. There’s a prominent bar, outdoor seating and a festive atmosphere that makes it particularly good for groups—or for settling in with a drink and seeing where the evening takes you.

Music/what makes it special: Live music is a big part of the Estelar experience, and on some nights you’ll find music happening both outside and inside. It’s one of those places where dinner can very easily turn into a much later night than originally planned.
Flamel
Description: Flamel is a speakeasy-style cocktail bar in Centro with a dark, theatrical interior that feels intentionally mysterious. Don’t confuse the low lighting with a quiet evening, though. Once the music gets going and the room fills up, the atmosphere changes completely.

Music/what makes it special: DJs are a regular part of the experience, with music leaning toward modern electronic and pop, although the programming varies. It’s a good option when you’re looking for cocktails but still want some energy around you.
Sala Sala
Description: Sala Sala is casual, social and very much designed around a night of drinks and music with friends. What makes the space particularly interesting is its setting inside Proyecto Casa 459, an old Mérida house that has been adapted rather than stripped of its original personality.

Music/what makes it special: DJs take over on the weekends, but we also love the way the bar works its way through the original rooms of the old mansion. Spaces that were once the kitchen, living room and even bathroom have been incorporated into the concept, giving you plenty to explore as you move around throughout the night.
Vanité MID
Description: Vanité MID is an intimate listening bar located inside Agnes restaurant in Centro Mérida. Mirrors, lighting and a disco/groove-inspired aesthetic give it a polished, slightly glamorous feeling. Music isn’t background noise here—it’s central to the entire concept.

Music/what makes it special: Music is one of the main reasons Vanité exists.
- Fridays and Saturdays: DJ sets using both digital and vinyl formats.
- During the week: Listening sessions featuring complete albums from different artists and genres.
It’s a particularly good choice for people who genuinely love music and want something more intentional than the usual bar playlist.
Lagarto de Oro
Description: Lagarto de Oro is a modern Yucatecan cantina in La Mejorada and a favorite with the younger local crowd, particularly people in their 20s and 30s. It takes the familiar Mexican cantina and gives it a much more playful personality—color, warm lighting, neon, kitschy details and a room that rarely feels too serious.

Music/what makes it special: There are DJs every day and live bands on certain nights, with plenty of Latin rhythms and upbeat, dance-friendly music. If you’re looking to mix with a predominantly local crowd and have a fun night out, this is a good one to know.
Salón Gallos
Description: Salón Gallos is much more than a bar. This large cultural, restaurant and nightlife space occupies a former oatmeal factory in La Mejorada, and much of the industrial character of the building remains. It’s one of those places where you can arrive for dinner, wander into another part of the complex for a drink and suddenly realize you’ve been there for hours.

Music/what makes it special: The complex brings together a restaurant, cocktail and wine bar, cinema, art gallery and performance space within the old industrial building. Different areas attract different crowds, which is precisely what makes Salón Gallos such an interesting place to spend an evening.
Hennessy’s Irish Pub
Description: Hennessy’s is a classic Irish-style pub occupying a restored colonial mansion on Paseo de Montejo, and if your priority is actually meeting people, put this one on your list. It has long been a gathering place for both foreigners and locals, and the pub setup naturally makes conversation easier. Inside you’ll find high ceilings, chandeliers, plenty of wood, a large main bar, a cozy back room and billiards, while outside there’s an open-air patio.

Music/what makes it special: Live music generally runs Wednesday through Saturday beginning around 8 pm, with everything from jazz and blues to classic rock. The combination of a proper pub bar and regular live music makes this one of the easier places in Mérida to arrive, grab a seat and end up talking to someone you’ve never met.

Excelsior Cantina
Description: Excelsior is a traditional Mérida cantina with an old-school personality and a history dating back to 1941. It has recently changed owners, bringing a more multicultural influence to the space while intentionally maintaining its connection to Mérida’s cantina culture.

Music/what makes it special: There are live-music nights, with sounds ranging from Latin rhythms and cumbia to blues. Come for the cantina atmosphere, have a few drinks and settle in—this is more about being part of the room than rushing through for one cocktail.
