Sometimes you don’t want to sit quietly over a cocktail. You want music, dancing, a live show and a little action.
Fortunately, Mérida has plenty of it.
One of the things I love about going out here is just how varied the music and entertainment scene has become. On any given weekend you can listen to jazz in a small cantina, dance to a live salsa band, sing karaoke with a room full of strangers, watch a drag show, hear a rock band practically within arm’s reach or stay out until 3 a.m. dancing to electronic music.
And there are some Mérida classics on this list, too. La Negrita is practically an institution, Dzalbay has been supporting the city’s jazz scene for years, and then there are newer spaces bringing everything from cabaret-style productions to DJs and vinyl into the mix.
The important thing is to check each venue’s social media before heading out. Mérida’s entertainment schedules change constantly, and the experience on a Thursday can be completely different from Saturday night.
So if you’re ready to get off the sofa and actually have some fun, here are some of our favorite places in Mérida for live music, dancing, shows and late-night entertainment.
Dzalbay
Description: Our local jazz cantina turned club, and a Mérida classic worth knowing. The mood is relaxed and social, but the music is clearly the focus. People come to sit with a drink, listen to the performers and catch some of the city’s best jazz, blues and funk musicians. And don’t overlook the food—the menu is pretty good too!

Music/what makes it special: Dzalbay calls itself “the home of jazz in Mérida” and regularly features live jazz and blues, with local musicians as well as national and international artists.
Bar El Patio | Cantina Contemporánea
Description: Bar El Patio is a contemporary cantina near Parque La Plancha that combines Mexican and international food, beer and cocktails with a very casual bar atmosphere. There’s an outdoor area and, most importantly, a stage where you’ll find live music—particularly rock—throughout the week.

Music/what makes it special: One of Mérida’s older cantina spaces, this is the kind of place where you can eat, drink, talk and then settle in for a live band.
TROPICO 56
Description: TROPICO 56 is a colorful tropical-style restaurant-bar at the Remate de Paseo de Montejo with plenty of greenery, murals and an outdoor patio. There’s a slightly beach-bar feeling to the space, and once the music starts, the atmosphere gets considerably livelier. This one is fun.

Music/what makes it special: The venue has live music, salsa and Latin rhythms as well as karaoke. Thursdays are karaoke nights and are particularly popular with both locals and foreigners who aren’t afraid to grab the microphone.
La Negrita Cantina
Description: La Negrita is one of Mérida’s best-known historic cantinas, just a few blocks from Parque Santa Ana. Operating since 1917, its identity is closely tied to the city’s cantina culture. It gets packed, particularly later in the day, and for first-time visitors who want to experience a lively Mérida cantina, this is one to know.

Music/what makes it special: La Negrita is known for live salsa bands and Mexican music, with the live music generally getting going in the early evening. If you’re hoping to dance, don’t be shy—the floor has a way of filling up.
Bernardette Show Bar
Description: This is your cabaret night in Mérida! The décor is appropriately dramatic, with velvet, blue lighting, stylish furniture and a central stage that makes it very clear you’ve come for a show. Expect drag queens, themed productions, costumes and plenty of talent. It’s an easy choice when the group wants more than dinner and drinks.

Music/what makes it special: The main Friday and Saturday show takes the audience on a musical trip through several decades with more than 20 performers. The repertoire moves through music from roughly the 1970s through the 2000s.
Bernardette Show Bar Instagram
XOXO Club
Description: XOXO is a modern, inclusive Mérida nightlife spot with DJs, dancing, cocktails and drag entertainment. It’s much more contemporary party club than traditional cabaret. It’s one of Mérida’s LGBTQ+ nightlife spaces, but you’ll find people of all orientations here. The mood is inclusive, playful and very much about having a good night out.

Music/what makes it special: The concept combines cocktails, DJ sets and live entertainment, with drag shows and plenty of dancing forming a big part of the experience.
DIX
Description: DIX is a small, energetic LGBTQ+ bar right by Parque Santa Lucía in Mérida’s Centro. Inside, it’s colorful and theatrical—neon lights, signs, screens, sparkle and, naturally, a disco ball. The smaller space also means you’re close to the action once the show starts.

Music/what makes it special: DIX features resident YucaDrag performers along with local, national and international guests. Shows change from night to night and can include everything from pop-diva tributes to karaoke and audience participation.
El Gran Santiago
Description: El Gran Santiago is a small, friendly LGBTQ+-friendly neighborhood bar and restaurant in Mérida’s Santiago neighborhood. The atmosphere is much more casual and community-oriented than a large nightclub, which is part of its appeal.

Music/what makes it special: It has a relaxed pub/bar feeling during the day but becomes considerably livelier when entertainment is scheduled. Drag shows are a regular part of the calendar, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings, along with bingo and other special events.
El Vientoooo
Description: El Vientoooo is a small, intimate bar inside Restaurante Ánimaaaa in Mérida Centro. The atmosphere is relaxed rather than flashy, with a more alternative, artsy and slightly underground feeling than many of the larger nightlife spots on this list.

Music/what makes it special: Part of the appeal is the combination of restaurant and intimate bar. Music contributes to the atmosphere rather than completely taking over the evening, making this a good choice when you want a night out without a huge club scene.
Lennon – North End of Mérida
Description: Lennon is a piano bar and lounge with an old-school cabaret feeling, and the room itself has been designed around listening to live music. It’s cozy, theatrical and particularly fun with a group of friends when everyone knows the songs.

Music/what makes it special: Music really is the heart of Lennon, with live piano and singers performing familiar Latin and international classics. Expect songs associated with artists such as Luis Miguel and José José—the kind of music that eventually has half the room singing along.
Disonante
Description: Disonante is a rock-focused live-music bar in Itzimná. The space is relatively intimate, with the stage right in the middle of the venue, so the experience feels much more like going to a small concert than simply listening to background music while having a drink.

Music/what makes it special: Rock is the focus here, with music in both English and Spanish. If you want guitars and a proper live-band atmosphere rather than salsa or electronic music, this is your spot.
Azotea Veintedoce
Description: Azotea Veintedoce is a nightclub and electronic-music space in Colonia México with a strong connection to Mérida’s underground electronic scene. The atmosphere is youthful, energetic and decidedly dance-focused—this isn’t somewhere you’re going for a quiet conversation over cocktails.
