One of the things I love most about living in Mérida is watching old historic properties find a new life. Across the city, beautiful colonial homes that might have otherwise been forgotten are being thoughtfully restored and transformed into boutique hotels, restaurants, galleries, and cultural spaces. When it’s done well, the result feels like more than a renovation—it becomes a way of preserving a piece of Yucatán’s history while giving it a new purpose. That was exactly the feeling I had during my recent stay at CIGNO Mejorada.
Located very close to the new Parque La Plancha as well as the Culinary Row on the Calle 47, CIGNO immediately feels different from many boutique hotels. There is a quiet elegance to the property that never feels forced or overly luxurious. Instead, it feels deeply connected to the city around it. The architecture, music, design details, and even the pace of life inside the hotel seem to encourage guests to slow down and experience Mérida rather than simply visit it.

A Beautiful Restoration in One of Mérida’s Most Charming Neighborhoods
La Mejorada has always been one of my favorite neighborhoods in Centro. While it’s within walking distance of many of Mérida’s most popular attractions, it still feels like a real neighborhood rather than a tourist district. The streets are lined with historic homes, local businesses, and some of the city’s most interesting cultural spaces. It’s the kind of area where you find yourself slowing down and wandering without much of a plan.

As soon as you enter CIGNO, the city noise seems to disappear. The property unfolds around peaceful courtyards, shaded patios, and beautifully designed common areas that invite you to linger a little longer than planned. Throughout the hotel you’ll find regional woods, handcrafted details, natural textures, and thoughtful design choices that celebrate Yucatán rather than compete with it. It’s contemporary, but it never loses its sense of place.
Rooms Designed With Mexican Character
The guestrooms are elegant without feeling overly formal. Natural materials, artisan-made details, and carefully selected furnishings create spaces that feel warm, inviting, and distinctly Mexican. Rather than following a generic luxury hotel formula, each room feels as though it belongs exactly where it is.
Some room categories include private terraces and plunge pools, creating an atmosphere that makes it very easy to spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing. During my stay, I found myself slowing down in a way that rarely happens when traveling. The rooms feel less like hotel accommodations and more like a private retreat tucked away inside one of Mérida’s historic homes.
The Sound of Yucatán
One detail I absolutely loved was the music. Throughout the hotel—and even softly playing in the rooms and bar—you hear Yucatecan trova drifting through the space. For visitors unfamiliar with trova, it is one of the region’s most beloved musical traditions, known for its romantic melodies and poetic storytelling.
It might seem like a small detail, but it changes the entire atmosphere of the hotel. Sitting in the courtyard with a morning coffee while hearing trova in the background somehow makes the experience feel more connected to Mérida itself. It’s the kind of thoughtful touch that many luxury properties overlook but one that guests often remember long after their stay.
Dining at Cocina Vidente
One of the highlights of our visit was dinner at Cocina Vidente, the hotel’s restaurant led by Chef Daniel Ron. The restaurant embraces a philosophy of seeing beyond the obvious, transforming simple ingredients into dishes that surprise and delight while remaining approachable. Rather than simply recreating traditional recipes, the kitchen reimagines local ingredients through a contemporary lens.
The tasting menu felt thoughtful and creative without becoming overly complicated. Every dish had a purpose, and the progression of flavors kept us curious about what would arrive next. It was clear that the culinary team understands that memorable dining experiences are about more than technique—they are about creating moments.
For those who aren’t staying at the hotel, the good news is that breakfast is currently open to the public, and it’s absolutely worth a visit. The setting alone makes for a wonderful morning, but the food easily stands on its own.

A Boutique Worth Browsing
Another unexpected surprise was the hotel’s beautifully curated boutique shop. Instead of filling the space with typical souvenirs, CIGNO has created a collection that celebrates contemporary Mexican design and craftsmanship. The selection includes textiles, clothing, jewelry, soaps, and artisanal pieces sourced from talented makers around the country.
I originally planned to simply browse before dinner, but that quickly changed. The collection feels carefully edited, making it difficult to leave empty-handed. In my case, I may have left with a beautiful dress that somehow convinced me it belonged in my suitcase.
